2018-2019 Prescott High School Athletic Department Highlights

476 Students Played Sports at Prescott High School During the 2018-2019 School Year


Each year, we like to share with our school, district, and community the awards, accolades, and accomplishments of our teams and department at Prescott High School.

FALL:

  • Badminton: Finished undefeated at 13-0 on the season & ranked #1 in Division II, Division II Northwest Section Champs (back to back years), Finished in the top 8 at Team State & hosted the 1st 2 rounds (back to back years)
  • Cross Country: (Boys and Girls)-Girls were Section Champions, State 2nd Place Team, State Individual Medalist 1st Team: Makenna Bray, 2nd Team: Emily McMahon. Boys-State 2nd Place Team, State Individual Medalist, 2nd Team: Alec Almendarez & Lisandro McCarter
  • Football: The Badgers finished 7-4, securing their 7th straight winning season, a first at PHS since the 1940’s. Desert Edge, Cactus, Saguaro and Prescott are the only schools in all of 4A to boast 7 consecutive winning seasons. The Badgers finished tied for first in the Grand Canyon and qualified for the 4A State Playoffs. The Badgers had 3 1st team all-state players and 4 NFF scholar-athletes (most in 4A). The team had a 3.2 team GPA in season and 7 players were 1st team all-region.
  • Golf (Girls): 2018 was a first to have 2 levels of golf- Varsity & Developmental League. Twelve young ladies came out and made big strides on the course. DL ladies finished with a 5-2 record with Joanna Osterloh & Makayla Reyes leading the way. Varsity finished 9th in our division for being a 1st-year team. Brannagh Woods and Kaity Kasun were leaders on the course.
  • Golf (Boys): The boys golf season was supposed to be a rebuilding year after losing 6 of the top 7 players from the state qualifying team of 2017-2018. With only one returning player, Beniam Osterloh, the team was able to pull together and finish the season in 2nd place for region 7 and 20th overall in the state rankings. Beniam Osterloh led the way finishing 6th place individually for the region.
  • Spirit Line: Carried banners for the Prescott Frontier Days Parade sponsors, helped local youth in need along with the local Police Departments at the Annual Shop-with-a-Cop Event. Welcomed Santa at the Prescott Holiday Parade, Visited the elderly at Las Fuentes. Performed for the State Student Council Convention, Taught and mentored Prescott Badger Youth Cheerleaders.
  • Swim (Boys and Girls): The boys had 5 wins and 4 losses and the Girls finished with 4 wins and 5 losses. The Boys team sent 4 swimmers to state where they finished 15th in the 200 Free Relay. One of our boys finished 2nd in the 100 fly with a time that qualified him for an All American-Consideration and 5th in the 100 Free.

WINTER:

  • Boys Basketball: The boys basketball team battled early and continued their growth and improvement as the year progressed. The team placed second at the Sedona Red Rocks Tournament and 2 players were recognized on the all-region 2nd team- Korey Schwartz (Jr) and Jason Parent (Fr) highlighted the year.
  • Girls Basketball: Final record of 10-16, ranked #25 in 4A
  • Boys Soccer: The 2018/19 season started exactly where the previous season left off with a winning record of 5-1 in the Region, securing their first region title since 1999. They extended their winning record with an overall 10-1-1 record and advanced to the finals of the 4A-State Finals, narrowly losing to Salpointe Catholic.
  • Girls Soccer: The PHS girl soccer team opened the 2018-2019 soccer season winning their first five games while scoring 34 goals and only conceding one goal. Prescott ran through conference play with a 5-1 record, ensuring a return trip to the AIA State soccer tournament, a #6 seed and hosting a first-round game against Poston Butte. The girls played well, beating Poston Butte which positioned them for a quarterfinal matchup against two-time defending champion Salpointe Catholic. The Badgers ended an amazing season with 14 wins and 4 loses, scoring 70 goals while conceding only 16.
  • Wrestling: At the Window Rock Veteran Memorial the team, for the first time, was awarded the Team Sportsmanship award for their conduct, professionalism, respect, camaraderie and sportsmanship. At sectionals, the team placed 3rd without a full roster, qualifying 6 out of 10 wrestlers. Those six guided PHS to an impressive finish of 11th out of the 50+ qualifying schools. Four wrestlers placed at the Arizona state tournament. Two of which weren’t expecting to place, however, both placed fourth. A successful season for those young men.

SPRING:

  • Softball: Final record 5-18, ranked #34 in 4A
  • Tennis (Boys and Girls): Girls team had a great season, ending up number 3 in the power rankings. They had a regular season record of 13-1 overall and lost in the semifinals of the state playoffs to Catalina Foothills, who won the team state championship. Boys tennis had a rough year based on overall record. We went 4-10. PHS had the toughest schedule for tennis based on the section of teams the Badgers play against.
  • Track and Field (Boys and Girls):
    • Girls State 2nd Place Team,
    • Individual Medalist:
      • 1st Place: 4 x 800: Castro, McKelvey, McMahon, Bray * School Record
      • 2nd Place: Long jump Lily Jensen, 4 x 100: Hoyt, Alvarez, Jensen, Kasun, 4 x 400: Alvarez, McKelvey, Bray, Kasun * School Record,
      • 3rd Place:1600 Makenna Bray
    • Boys: State 20th place, 4th Place: Javelin – Matt Kaitchuck

  • Boys: 270
  • Females: 206
  • TOTAL: 476 student-athletes participated in at least one sport this year. 38% of students at Prescott participated in a sport.

  • Four Year Letterman (student-athletes who participated all four years of high school on a varsity team): 13 student-athletes
