With weather reports forecasting significant moisture for the state this week, Avondale Fire and Medical is warning the public to stay away from flooded roads and washes. The Salt River Project (SRP) is anticipating increased releases from Granite Reef Dam, causing an abundance of water in natural waterways, including significant flow across El Mirage Road between Southern Avenue and Indian Springs Road by late Thursday or Friday.

“Avondale Fire and Medical has already responded to three water rescues this week,” said Aaron Glass, Avondale Deputy Emergency Operations Chief. “It is important for people to be aware of the dangers of drowning from crossing flooded roads and waterways. It takes as little as a foot of rushing water to carry away most cars, and a mere 6 inches of fast-moving water to knock over an adult.” He added: “If you see a flooded road—Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

The city will be sharing information from National Weather Service in order to educate the public on the risks associated with crossing flooded roads and washes. Everyone is urged to use caution when traveling in areas that are prone to flooding or near bodies of water that may overflow their banks due to heavy rains.
