Banner Health Finding a New Home in Prescott

The landscape of Healthcare may look different in Prescott soon. Recently, Prescott City Council approved the rezoning of a parcel of land along Willow Creek Road that had originally been intended as the Whispering Rock commercial subdivision. Dr. Hojat Askari is developing a 20-acre parcel of land across from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He told the City at a November 12 Council meeting that the plans call for a Banner Hospital; an MD Anderson Cancer Center; a large resort and conference center; a complex containing assisted living and independent living units; 30 homes to accommodate physicians and nurses; and a food court and coffee shops for the nearby Embry-Riddle students.

Askari told the Council that the hospital is expected to include 156 beds; a helicopter pad for emergency care; a 24/7 emergency room; and a number of new medical functions such as robotic surgery for OB/GYN, additional neurologists, orthopedists, and cardiologists.

According to Planning Manager in the Community Development Department George Worley, with the amended zoning, Banner Hospital will be able to “request a minor exception to our standard 50-foot building height limit in commercial districts. Banner, as with most hospitals, has a requirement for higher ceilings on its first floor to accommodate al of the unique medical utilities required to service the various medical uses within a hospital.”

The City expects that Banner Hospital will be back to Planning and Zoning Commission as well as getting with City Council with more detailed building plans for the height exception request.

This is wonderful for our community and may reduce patients trips too Phoenix for treatment.

  2. J J says:

Will definitely welcome some competition for YRMC. Maybe their quality of care will improve.

    • Robin Green says:

How so? Yrmc is an actual hopital. This facility is a cancer care center. There is no cancer treatments at east or west campuses and there will be no other services at banner but cancer care…

      • Shirley says:

According to the above article: “Askari told the Council that the hospital is expected to include 156 beds; a helicopter pad for emergency care; a 24/7 emergency room; and a number of new medical functions such as robotic surgery for OB/GYN, additional neurologists, orthopedists, and cardiologists.”

Not only a cancer center but other specialties will be in place.

      • Diane says:

Banner will have all specialties besides a cancer center according to the article.

  3. Susan says:

This is great news for our area ! Thank-you !!!!

  4. Richard J Ardis says:

I think that Banner coming to the Prescott area will benefit the community, provide well paying jobs to our residents , create competition that will improve overall care and give our residents first class care without going to the Greater Phoenix area for treatment. Will also stimulate the overall economy and act as a hedge against an economic slowdown because healthcare jobs cannot be exported to other countries.

  5. Candi says:

This is a great opportunity to provide new opportunities and higher quality of care as well as competitive salary for healthcare workers. Looking forward to the competition.

  6. Barbara Hedstrom says:

Well hurry up and finish it !!! We need it NOW.

  7. Brea says:

It will be a blessing to have a newer hospital that hopefully has better standards of care and can hopefully provide some healthy competition for YRMC.

  8. Kathryn Wayt says:

Does anyone know if there will be a memory care facility at Prescott’s Banner Hospital?

  9. Gary says:

Does anyone know when this hospital will be complete? Everyone we ask in town has no idea if it’s even started or if the deal fell through?

    • Julie R says:

The deal hasn’t fallen through. It takes time from start to finish. I don’t know if you’ve driven by there or not, but ground has been broken; they’re developing the streets in and around it; lots of other grading. I would say it might be done in a few years but I’m not certain.

Wonder where all this money is coming from? Dr. Hojat Askari, if not who? I have always received great
care at our local hospital. Care all depends on the person taking care of you. We did not receive good
care when my husband was a patient at Thumb Butte Medical.
This all sounds lovely and “yes” we can always add another hospital, it also sounds very costly. I do
wonder how that will affect me personally. I do know that the road system as it is will not accommodate
    all this added traffic.

I hope they will pay all there employee positions better then YRMC dose. Getting a gift card every now and then doesn’t pay the house bills.
