College Fair to Host Over 80 Post-Secondary Education Institutions
Wed, Oct 24, 2018

Representatives from over 80 post-secondary education institutions will be at Bradshaw Mountain High School of Prescott Valley on Wednesday, October 24th, 2018 for the 12th Annual College Fair. Guidance Counselor Rita Lohman says the college fair is open to all Yavapai County freshman through senior year students.

College Fair

“(The college fair) provides an opportunity to the Bradshaw Mountain High School kids and other students that they might not otherwise get,” Lohman said, adding around 500 people attended the college fair last year.

OVER 80 EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS FROM LOCAL TO AROUND THE COUNTRY SET TO ATTEND

Representatives from close schools, such as, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona will be in attendance in addition to schools out of state including the University of Oregon, University of Northern Colorado, University of the Pacific, University of Wyoming and Pacific Lutheran University, just to name a few. Furthermore, representatives from the United States Army and Navy will also be at the college fair.

Lohman mentioned students and parents can come and learn about the institutions, admission requirements, the culture and programs offered. Representatives will also have information on possible scholarships and financial aid.

COLLEGE FAIR MIGHT MAKE HIGH SCHOOL MORE MEANINGFUL FOR SOME STUDENTS

Lohman says knowledge of secondary information may prove beneficial in motivating the students as they go through their high school career.

“High school for some might become more meaningful if they see it as just one stop, if it’s looked at more of a transition,” Lohman said, adding the college fair is also important for freshmen to come and learn that requirements for some scholarships start in their freshman year. “Knowledge is power so now they have knowledge and information on different schools. They may be feeling empowered; like now I can do this, I have a good sense of what I need to do and I have a contact at the university or college or technical school.”

FINANCIAL AID PRESENTATION AND WORKSHOP ALSO TO TAKE PLACE

Alongside the college fair, Lohman said there will also be a financial aid presentation in the Bradshaw Mountain High School Library at 5:30 pm or 6:00 pm and a financial aid workshop in room C104 and C108 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. The financial aid workshop will help parents and students fill out the FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) paperwork.

Before attending the college fair, Lohman recommends-especially seniors-look at schools and highlight some in order to go to those tables first. Conversely, if students have already applied to a school, Lohman recommends going to the school’s table and introducing themselves to the representative so they have a contact for any questions. In addition, Lohman recommends bringing an unofficial transcript and a notepad.

The 12th Annual College Fair takes place Wednesday, October 24th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at Bradshaw Mountain High School.
