School Record Broken – 4.740 GPA & $160,000 in Scholarships

Bradshaw Mountain High School Valedictorian Thaddeus P. Martin broke the school’s record for GPA with a 4.740 mark and earned approximately $160,000 in scholarships. The senior credits the Bradshaw Mountain High School academic advisement office for informing him about the various scholarships available.

“The counselors that we have here are just phenomenal,” Martin said. “While they’ve kept us informed, they’ve also guided us to make sure that we did get all of the opportunities and accomplish everything that we can.”

Bradshaw Mountain High School Principal Kort Miner said the school only combined to earn about $850,000 in scholarships fourteen years ago. Now at over 30 million dollars covering the last four years, Miner says it’s all about getting the scholarship information out.

“Really just making students and parents aware what is out there,” Miner said.

A portion of getting crucial scholarship information into the hands of students and parents takes place at the annual college fair which occurs in the fall at the school. At this hour and a half event, students and their parents can meet representatives from over 80 universities both in and out of state.

Boost in Scholarships Provided by Exposure to Colleges

“Students and the parents have that exposure to colleges on a big scale,” Bradshaw Mountain High School Academic Advisor Myrna Villa said, relating the boost in scholarship dollars to the introduction of the college fair. “They are able to be exposed to all of the different things they (colleges) can offer within and outside of the state.”

“Part of it is that exposure to what’s out there, the fact that it’s not this invisible force out there where they have no contact with,” Villa continued. “It’s actually a very personal kind of thing.”

Competitiveness Plays a Role

While information is key, Miner says an underlying piece is competition.

“Every year, that junior class wants to beat or match that senior class,” Miner said, mentioning the extraordinary scholarship amounts have been taking place for long enough that siblings and peers are witnessing the success and have the knowledge they can do it too. “We’re talking about bragging rights.”

Now with a goal in place, Martin recommends the incoming seniors be ambitious with both their education and scholarship journey.

“I think sometimes they see some of these projects, schools and scholarships and think they are out of their reach, but often times they are not,” Martin said. “I would really like to see some of them really go out and try as much as they can.”

“Cast a wide net and I’m sure they will find success,” Martin continued.
