Chino Valley Police Chief Chuck Wynn presented nine of his officers with Life Saving Awards at the Town Council meeting on Tuesday evening, May 10, 2022.
Chino Valley Officer Jonethen Mitea, Lt. Josh McIntire, Lt. Randy Chapman, Sgt. Cody Johnson, FTO Jon Szymanski, SRO Jeff Pizzi, FTO Todd Hyslip, Officer Jay Murray, and Officer David Herrera (not present) were recognized for their heroic efforts with one or more of three critical incidents in which they were first on the scene.
The first incident was a tragic two-vehicle rollover involving local high school students. Officers were able to triage the injured and alert fire that additional response vehicles and air support would be needed. In the motorcycle incident, the officers were able to stop the bleeding with a tourniquet and stabilize the victim until fire arrived. In the last incident, the officer was able to clear the airway and again stabilize the victim until fire arrived.
Mayor, Vice-Mayor, and Town Council came down from the dais to personally thank each officer for their bravery after which the officers received a standing ovation from the room. The presentation culminated in an emotional moment when many of the students involved in the first incident assembled with the officers for a picture, and they and their families were able to personally express their gratitude to the officers whose quick action was key to their being able to be present in the room.
Vice-Mayor Perkins summed it up well when she said, “These kids are Chino Valley High School kids.” She continued, “A couple of those kids weren’t expected to make it. I’m up here crying because they are here. A lot of prayers and a lot of gratitude to our PD and everyone involved.”
With all the negative that seems to surround us these days, it is more important than ever to take advantage of moments to celebrate extraordinary action and life-affirming events. We are proud of the selfless service and heroic action of our police officers who day in and day out serve the public good and make Chino Valley a safe and enjoyable place to live, work and visit.
