This revised and amended posting shall only be open for a short period of time with the expedited deadline of June 20, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.

Notice is hereby given that the posting for the position entitled, “Town Building Official/Inspector,” is hereby revised and amended to the modified description entitled, “Town Building Inspector/Maintenance & Compliance Official.”

The former position was previously filled by a part-time employee without full benefits. The Town Manager has concluded that consolidation of additional duties from other Town positions must be included to increase the workload to justify a full-time position with benefits. This necessitated a revision of duties, skills, and required certifications.

All previously submitted applications and resumes for the position of “Town Building Official/Inspector” shall be considered under the newly revised duties, skills, and requisites contained within the amended description entitled “Town Building Inspector/Maintenance & Compliance Official.”

Those applicants who desire to withdraw or amend may do so before the expedited deadline.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Town Building Inspector/Maintenance & Compliance Official

Deadline for Submission June 20, 2023

BACKGROUND: The Town of Dewey-Humboldt is seeking a unique individual capable of multi-tasking in various job positions (general factotum). This position will work part-time as a building inspector/compliance official, while also being responsible for facilities maintenance of Town buildings when needed. Maintains Town buildings and upkeep, including procurement of materials and equipment (may include electronics), diagnosis and minor repairs, inside improvements, etc. Consideration of other experience in electrical/electronic maintenance, procurement, and/or experience in working with IT will be preferable. Candidates must be able to obtain an ICC Combination Inspector certification within one (1) year of hiring date. The building activity is mostly residential and is such that one qualified person can manage both the Inspector functions and the other duties listed above.

JOB OBJECTIVES

As Building Inspector/Compliance Officer employee manages, coordinates, and conducts inspections, administers the documentation/approval of issued permits, and calculates permit fees. Interprets and enforces building codes, compiles statistical information of building functions, and works closely with the Building Department’s administrative assistant in recording and maintaining records. Investigates Town Code violations pursuant to current policy and on life/safety matters and will be responsible for seeking compliance. Maintains Town’s buildings through repair and/or improvements, including updating of electronics and other equipment. Providing helpful and expeditious customer service is of utmost importance.

A. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives administrative direction from the Town Manager/Zoning Administrator or his/her designee. Corroborates efforts with the department’s contracted plan reviewers, documentation, and scheduling of inspections and approvals with the Administrative Assistant, the Community Development Coordinator, and the Public Works Supervisor.

B. POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

Manages program operations by developing, interpreting, and implementing policies, providing general direction to staff and contracted plan consultants’ implementation of procedures involved in the building plan review, building inspections, and permit issuance. Interprets building codes by researching codes and related material, consulting with owners, designers, staff, and plan review consultants, and resolving issues as needed. Implementing building codes by performing plan review, building inspections, permit issuance, and enforcement process. Ability to diagnose and repair related equipment and maintain and improve the Town’s buildings. Must procure necessary tools and parts and to adequately repair and maintain electronics and other equipment. Responsible for providing responsive customer service and full explanations of compliance issues and other code violations.

C. CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE/CERTIFICATION

C.1 Knowledge of:

Work requires ability to ascertain and grasp, practical knowledge of building codes, plan review policies and processes, project management, procurement, and organization management with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work duties assigned. Ability to diagnose and repair or improve structures and repair or procure equipment.

C.2 Ability to:

Maintain professional status through memberships in professional organizations, literature review, and specialized courses.

D. Experience and Training:

Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and skill in performing the tasks listed above provides added value and savings to the Town. An ICC Combination Inspector Certification must be obtained within one (1) year of hiring date.

E. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

E.1 Physical Requirements:

Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and 40 or more pounds of force infrequently. The use of arms and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work, and medium to heavy work may be involved to carry out inspection supervision. Must be able to climb ladders.

E.2 Work Environment:

The position is partially office or administrative work; however, field inspections and other skilled work may require knowledge of tools for minor repairs, use of computers and software, and understanding of electronics, sound systems, and basic electrical.

E.3 License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid Arizona Driver’s License.

  • FLSA Status: Non-exempt. Full-time
  • Reports to: Town Manager
  • Salary Range: $22 – $39 per hour depending on experience, with full-time benefit package including health insurance, vacation, sick time, 401(a), and/or 457 retirement plans. The town does not pay social security.
