Pima Animal Care Centers in Tucson and Ajo, AZ are collaborating with Pima County’s District 5 to hold a supply distribution drive on May 8, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Mission Manor Elementary, 600 West Santa Rosa Street.

A variety of supplies for pets including food, collars, leashes, bowls, toys, and more will be available at the May 8 event. Human supplies also are available, including hygiene items, cleaning products, blankets, and more. All items will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. PACC staffers will hand them out until 4 p.m. or until supplies run out.

“For over a year now, pet owners have been asking us for help,” said Monica Dangler, Interim Director of Animal Services. “Thanks to partnerships with Greater Good and Amazon, we have been able to step up and hold several events like these.”

This outreach drive is being held in Pima County’s District 5, represented by Supervisor Adelita Grijalva.

“After the success of the first outreach drive in District 5, I knew we had to hold another one here,” Grijalva said. “The shelter brought so many items, but the need was so great that pet food ran out quickly. We hear you and we are here to help!”

In 2020, PACC handed out 2.13 million meals and 36,180 pounds of supplies to vulnerable owners, housed 137 animals for owners who were hospitalized due to COVID, vaccinated 300 pets, and provided minor medical care to 500 pets.

So far in 2021, PACC is on target to hit the same numbers, providing 177,231 meals, 15,343 pounds of pet supplies, and 6,260 human supplies. The shelter has housed 105 animals for owners in crisis and provided minor medical care to over 200 animals. Thanks to outreach events like these, PACC has also vaccinated 406 animals and placed 180 microchips into pets. Through the Pet Support Center, PACC has assisted 3,578 pet owners.

“The need is there,” said Michele Figueroa, Director of Human Animal Support Services at PACC. “So many of us have felt the impact from this pandemic, and if we can help ease some of the difficulties, we are more than happy to put the work into setting up these events.”

All of the items to be distributed were paid for or donated by Friends of Pima Animal Care Center, GreaterGood.org, and Amazon. If you would like to help the shelter continue to hold events like these, please consider making a donation at friendsofpacc.org.
