In preparation for the prom and graduation season, the Goodyear Police and Fire Departments partnered with the Agua Fria Unified High School District on April 8 to demonstrate a mock DUI crash in front of students at Desert Edge High School. The purpose of the presentation was to reinforce the message for teens to avoid underage drinking and to drive sober. The demonstration featured a realistic scenario where police and firefighters responded to a DUI crash.

“We showed students the horrific reality of a DUI crash and the severe consequences that can go along with it,” said Student Resource Officer Sgt. Sean Tyler. “They witnessed the dramatization of a DUI arrest, a traffic death investigation and death notification, as well as a chilling reaction of a devastated parent. This simple, yet impactful exercise could be key to saving lives.”

With local schools entering the prom and graduation season, Goodyear first responders want to assure that those who are celebrating do it responsibly.

“The top priority of the Goodyear Police and Fire Departments is the safety of the public,” said Police Chief Santiago Rodriguez. “Prom and graduation season is the ideal time to educate our youth on the dangers of underage drinking and driving under the influence. If this demonstration saves just one life or prevents a serious injury, it is all worthwhile.”
