Common Signs of Hearing Loss and How to Get Help

Many people experience hearing loss and are not even aware of it. In fact, people tend to avoid addressing the problem of poor hearing performance until they are “nudged” by a spouse or other loved one, or a close friend.

Requesting that people repeat what they just said or to speak more loudly is often a signal that it is time to get a hearing test. To the person with impaired audio perception, speech often sounds like mumbling and other sounds often seem muffled.  Do you constantly need to turn up the volume when watching TV or listening to the radio?

Those with hearing loss often experience problems understanding phone conversations. They also find it a challenge to differentiate consonants when people are speaking. One of the distinguishing symptoms of hearing loss is the inability to hear high-pitched sounds (such as birds, doorbells phone rings, etc.)

People with impaired hearing are likely to have difficulty hearing conversations in noisy places, like restaurants or meetings. They will find themselves requesting that others speak more slowly and clearly. Ringing, humming, or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus) is also common for those with hearing loss.

Hearing Loss Causes Isolation and Anxiety.  Get it Checked!

For many, anxiety at social events or in group settings is the sad result of the inability to hear. Anxiety frequently inclines those with hearing impairment to avoid social settings entirely.

Like routine wellness exams with your physician, visits for a hearing test should be recognized as being important to your overall health. If you are at above-average risk for hearing impairment, regular hearing tests are especially important. High-risk factors include employment in a noisy environment, whether indoors, or outdoors. Those who engage in noisy activities, such as playing loud music are at especially high risk for damage to the inner ear. Certain medicines, including some antibiotics, pain relievers, and other medications, can also be a factor in reduced hearing performance.

The good news is that hearing aids are the most common and usually the most effective treatment for hearing impairment. Technology, in hearing devices, has come a long way! Today there are many discreet and tiny hearing aids available.
