Earlier this week, Governor Doug Ducey and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman announced the extension of Arizona school closures through the end of the school year. While we have been planning and preparing for an extended closure, the physical closing of our schools and district offices for the remainder of the year is difficult for all of us to process. With this said, we remain committed to preparing our students academically, and staying connected with our families.

While the expectation is that our students continue to progress in learning, we recognize that some of our students may be dealing with variables beyond their control. We know that both parents and staff are working through new challenges during this time, and we want to be sensitive to this reality. With distance learning, we understand students are being asked to learn much more independently and with less direct instruction than they typically receive in a face-to-face setting. We are also aware that many of our students do not have a stay-at-home parent to guide them through learning during the day. Thus the grading expectations for the fourth quarter of the 2019-2020 school year will be as follows:

  • Elementary (K-6) Grading Expectations:

    • Fourth quarter final grades will be for parent’s information only. Students not submitting a learning activity will receive no mark, not a zero. Printed packets are not expected to receive feedback or grades.

  • Middle School/High School (Grades 7-12) Grading Expectations (not including dual enrollment or advanced placement courses):

    • Official grades are based on semester percentages. Second-semester grades will remain the same as they were at the conclusion of the third quarter for reporting purposes.

    • Teachers may increase a student’s semester grade if work turned in during the closure reflects improvement. Students not submitting a learning activity will receive no mark, not a zero. Printed packets are not expected to receive feedback, but grades may be given, provided it improves a student’s overall grade.

  • Dual Enrollment or Advanced Placement Grading Expectations:

    • For Dual Enrollment classes, fourth quarter and final semester grades will reflect learning from the fourth quarter as evidenced by the assignments submitted based on guidance provided by the dual enrollment college.

    • For Advanced Placement classes, fourth quarter and final semester grades may reflect learning from the fourth quarter as evidenced by the assignments submitted. Final exam activities are teacher-optional.

The tireless efforts of teachers, staff, and leaders these past few weeks have allowed us to continue providing general education opportunities in a variety of ways. We know that this looks different for each student and family during these times. As we transition from the classroom to home, we do so with the commitment to stay connected and to ensure that the needs of our students and families are met to the best of our ability. Please feel free to reach out to your school sites or teachers with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Dan Streeter, Ed.D.

Superintendent
