This week, French high fashion brand Louis Vuitton named Pharrell Williams their newest Men’s Creative Director. Pharrell Williams, Pharrell, or Skateboard P among many other names, originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is most well-known for his influence in music as a rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer. You may have heard his music production with his four-beat intro in songs like “Drop It Like It’s Hot” by Snoop Dogg or his latest hit “Cash In Cash Out” with 21 Savage and Tyler, The Creator.

While Pharrell Williams has most of his entrepreneurship in music, his latest venture is with one of haute couture’s finest. On February 13, Louis Vuitton announced Pharrell as their newest creative director. Williams takes the place of Virgil Abloh, the founder of streetwear brand Off-White, who passed away in November of 2021. Although Pharrell is mostly known for his music work, his knowledge surrounding fashion should not be taken lightly. The musician has worked with brands like Adidas, Moncler, Comme des Garcons, and Chanel. Pharrell also worked with Louis Vuitton in 2004 for his personal line of sunglasses.
Louis Vuitton released a statement on their website regarding the decision:
“Pharrell Williams is a visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion…The way in which he breaks boundaries across worlds he explores, aligns with Louis Vuitton’s status as a Cultural Maison”
It will be exciting to see what new directions Pharrell can take Louis Vuitton in, and how he will blend his love for fashion and music together in future Louis Vuitton shows.
