this day in history featured

On January 3, 1938, President Roosevelt, afflicted with Polio himself, began the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Roosevelt encouraged Americans to donate Dimes to help fund research for a polio vaccine, as this childhood disease was quite common at this time, much more than today. In 1946, the U.S. Dime would be minted with the image of President Roosevelt’s likeness in honor of his work to find a vaccine for Polio.

The March of Dimes Foundation has not only focused on Polio, but other ailments that afflict children. Currently, one of its biggest pushes is to prevent premature births in the U.S. On January 3, 1938, a light in the darkness was lit for children in our country and the world, and the March of Dimes keeps marching on.
