Town Councilwoman Mary Mallory spearheaded the effort to bring a Healing Field of Flags to Prescott Valley in September 2012. That year, 1,200 flags flew at the Town’s Civic Center grounds. The community rallied behind the effort, and in Sept., 2013, 3,000 flags commemorated lives lost in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Each flagpole bears information about the victims of the attacks.
The effort began as a simple way for one person to visualize and comprehend the sheer enormity of the human loss that occurred in the terrorist attacks. As more and more volunteers gathered, it was clear something much more was emerging. Today, hundreds of Healing Fields and Field of Honor displays are organized throughout the country. Included on the Field of Flags are 19 Granite Mountain Hotshot flags honoring the 19 that lost their life in the Yarnill Hill fire on June 30, 2013.
For one week, the Civic Center grounds become hallowed as we honor and remember these lives lost.
