Prescribed Burn Planned July 21-26 on the Chino Valley Ranger District

Fire managers on the Bradshaw/Chino Valley Ranger District are planning to conduct the Graver Wash RX which is a restoration burn sometime between July 21st and July 26th; when the conditions are most favorable for a successful outcome. Graver Wash is an 8,072-acre prescribed burn unit, but managers do not intend to treat the whole 8,072 acres during this treatment. Managers will be focusing on black lining the perimeter and targeting available fuel interior. This project may require multiple entries over multiple years to treat the entire project area.

The objective of this burn is to improve native vegetation conditions by allowing fire to reduce shrub and juniper fuel loadings while also enhancing the condition of ponderosa pine stands.
Fire managers plan to treat vegetation utilizing a mosaic pattern to create age class diversity in the shrub species. Managers will target old decadent stands of oak brush to restore and rejuvenate this brow for wildlife and reduce the threat of wildfire. Aerial ignitions may be utilized if conditions allow, so aircraft may be visible in the area. The timing of this project has been well planned to intentionally capture the onset of monsoon moisture; historically this is when fire would have naturally occurred in Camp Wood.

Graver Wash RX – 8072 Acres (view map)

  • Township 18N. Range 6W Sections – 35, 36
  • Township 17N. Range 6W Sections – 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 22, 23, 26, 27
  • Township 17N. Range 5W Sections – 6, 7, 1`8, 19

Smoke will be visible from Prescott, Williamson Valley, Chino Valley, Paulden, and areas surrounding the burn. Expect fire traffic on County Road 68, County Road 125, Forest Road 95, and Forest Road 95a. No trail or road closures are in effect, but we ask the public to use caution when in and around the burn areas in Camp Wood.
All prescribed fire activity is dependent on the availability of personnel and equipment, weather forecasts, fuel moisture levels, and conditions that minimize smoke impacts as best as possible and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
