Roughriders Sweep Artichokes

The Roughrider baseball teams bounced back from a doubleheader loss on Saturday to a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday. Yavapai beat Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale Tuesday afternoon, 12-6 and 15-7. YC improves their overall record to 7-6 and their conference record to 2-2.

In the opener, the Roughriders jumped out to an early lead in the 12-6 victory. Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base. Yavapai collected 11 hits and the Artichokes had nine.

YC began the scoring in the first inning on a single by TJ Wheeler chasing home Damone Hale.

Scottsdale evened things up at one in the bottom of the first inning.

The Roughriders pulled away for good with four runs in the second inning. YC scored on a pair of Artichoke errors, a single by Hale, and a sacrifice fly from Noah Turley.

Scottsdale added another run in their half of the third inning. YC put two runs across in the top of the 4th inning and Scottsdale pulled to within one run-scoring 4 runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

YC scored five runs in the sixth inning to secure the victory capped by a grand slam from Turley.

Taisei Yahiro took the win for the Roughriders. The ace lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out four and walking one. Joseph Silverio threw two and a third innings in relief out of the bullpen recording the last seven outs to earn the save.

Hale was 3 for 4 scoring four runs. Turley was 2 for 3 with 6 runs batted in. Kade York was also 2 for 3.

In the nightcap, Yavapai stole the lead late in the game in the 15-7 victory. The game was tied at seven with YC batting in the top of the sixth when Noah Turley’s sac fly scored one run for the Roughriders.

Josh Romero led YC to victory by driving in six runs. Romero went 3-for-4 at the plate driving in runs on a home run in the sixth and a single in the seventh.

Cam Jowaiszas got things going in the 1st inning homering on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.

YC scored four runs in the top of the second, one run in the top of the fifth and four runs in the top of the sixth, and four in the top of the seventh.

Scottsdale scored a single run in the first inning, two in the fourth, and four in the fifth.

Ben Staiger earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound for Yavapai. The fireballer went one and one-third innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out two. Declan Dutton threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Matt Bachelier started the game for Yavapai College. Bachelier allowed four hits and three runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three

YC socked two home runs on the day. Romero went for the long ball in the sixth inning. Jowaiszas went yard in the first inning.

Yavapai College racked up 12 hits. Romero, Damone Hale, Jowaiszas, and Turley all managed multiple hits. Jowaiszas led YC with three stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with eight stolen bases.

Yavapai returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 6th at Chandler-Gilbert Community College beginning at 12:00 PM.
