When hiking, we don’t recommend hiking alone. Always let someone know where you are going and when you are coming home, especially if you can’t find a friend or family member to hike with you. Take plenty of water, a first aid kit, and snacks. Be prepared for the summer monsoon season.

Take your charged cell phone with you and dress properly for the area. Lock your vehicle at the trailhead parking and conceal all valuables or put them in the trunk. Ensure the keys to your vehicle are in a safe place in your pack. Don’t try to hide your keys around the vehicle.

Enjoy the company and the atmosphere when you go swimming; however, avoid horseplay or pranks. When thinking about playing a practical joke on someone else, consider how you would like that same prank played on you. If boating, ensure you have personal floatation devices/life jackets for everyone on board.

When walking or biking at night, dress in light-colored or reflective clothing and obey all pedestrian and traffic laws. Keep a flashlight handy for dark streets. When riding a bike have the proper lighting so drivers can see you. It is good to use front and rear lighting in the daytime too. While walking, keep your head up, and eyes open, and be aware of your surroundings as well as those around you especially if you are using your cellphone.

If you are driving or a passenger, make sure your seatbelts are fastened and obey all traffic laws. If consuming alcoholic beverages, have a designated driver.

Situational awareness is always a first step in defensive living. Take the necessary precautions to keep safe and enjoy the summer!
