It was just 530 years ago today, January 16, 1493, when the Admiral of the Seas, Christopher Columbus, left the island of Hispaniola, and set sail to return to the Old World. It had been less than a year since the three ships departed Spain.
In that time, Columbus and his men had made a wealth of discoveries and had made several alliances with the tribes. On Christmas, the Santa Maria had run aground, and so now only two ships, Columbus on the Nina, and Pinzon on the Pinta, made the trek back home.
However, the journey was far from over, not only would the two Captains be pitted against each other, but something new to most westerners, a hurricane, would interfere, almost killing them. And yet, the brave Commander made it back, and to great fanfare, along with more voyages. 530 years ago today, Columbus headed once again across the Atlantic Ocean, this time, for home.
