It was 80 years ago today, January 15th, 1943, when the Pentagon, our nation’s military headquarters, was completed and dedicated during World War II. Construction on the Pentagon had begun on September 11, 1941 and was completed in less than two years.
The Pentagon is a very large structure, but is more sprawled out due to the fact that steel shortages during WWII caused the building to be built mostly of reinforced concrete, which though strong, does not provide for a tall building. In the end, the Pentagon cost $3.1 million dollars for construction. Still today the Pentagon is an impressive site to see, having offices for many military officials and civilian employees.
