It was just 160 years ago today, April 15, 1861, when newly elected President Abraham Lincoln, desperately trying to keep this Great Nation together, asked the states still in the Union to send a force of 75,000 soldiers to supplement the small American Army. These Men would only be needed for three months, however, this was not so easy a task, as several other states would secede, and leave the Union.

The Standing Army was rather small, around 16,000 soldiers, mostly out west to face the threat of Native Tribes, and the Navy wasn’t the Grey Navy of WWII. Not too mention, many soldiers joined the South when the Confederacy was established. Sadly, the war would not go on for just three months, and both sides would force conscription on their Men.
