It was just 61 years ago today, August 1, 1961, when the United States created the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). During the rise of conflict in the Cold War, the U.S. needed as many clandestine military agencies as possible. On this date, Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara and the Joint Chief of Staffs (JCS) published Directive 5105.21, officially creating the DIA.
Still working today, the Defense Intelligence Agency continues to protect this nation, its motto being just that, Committed to Excellence in Defense of the Nation. As with many organizations of its nature, the DIA has been accused of many dark things, including torture. At the same time, it has also done many things to protect this Nation as well. Today, thousands of Americans continue to serve under the DIA, and it all began 61 years ago, today.
