It was just 35 years ago today, December 14, 1986, when American pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager took off from Edward’s Airforce Base in California on their mission to fly across the world, without stopping. Voyager, a cramped lightweight plane made mostly of fiberglass, did not provide for a luxury flight, but it did the trick.

The trip was not without its hazards, during takeoff, the wing tips actually hit the ground, though only causing minor damage. Fatigue was great among the crew, with several days of flight without break. The crew stayed away from bad weather, and hostile nations that did not like an American plane flying over their airspace. Finally, after nine days, three minutes, and 44 seconds, they landed safely to a thunderous applause on December 23, 1986. 35 years ago today, the first ever non-stop flight around the world without being refueled began its incredible journey.
