It was just 230 years ago today, December 15, 1791, when the first ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States were ratified when Virginia gave its approval as the 11th state out of thirteen. Our Constitution is made of seven articles, yet many people do not realize that the rights we hold dear, such as Religion, Speech, and the right to own Weapons, were not actually included in the original documents of the Constitution.
In the end, as I tell my students, the only people that will ever protect your rights, is yourself. I don’t mean to worry people, but amendments and the Constitution can, and have been changed. Out of the ten amendments that comprise the Bill of Rights, not one pillar is free from public attack from various groups. As Benjamin Franklin once stated after the Constitutional Convention, and I paraphrase as I write; “We have given you a Republic, if you can keep it”. 230 years ago today, the Bill of Rights were approved, it is up to you, dear reader, to keep them.
What was happening yesterday, on December 14th?
