This Day In History, December 20th, 2019 – “Secession”

Article audio is made possible by CAST11 Prescott Podcast Network. A Talking Glass Media production.

It was just 159 years ago today, December 20, 1860, when the first state in the U.S. voted to secede, or leave, the Union. South Carolina, leading the charge for secession and later creation of the Confederacy, left the Union before the dreaded Yankee Abraham Lincoln could even take the oath of office. This would lead to a cataclysm of bloodshed the likes which had never been seen on the North American continent. For years differences in the U.S. have been reaching a fever point, and on this date, 159 years ago today, differences within the country would lead to war.
