This Day In History, December 27th, 2021 – “The Fiesta Bowl”

It was just 50 years ago today, December 27, 1971, when the first ever Fiesta Bowl was played. Held at Arizona State University’s Tempe Stadium, the game pitted ASU against the Independent Florida State Seminoles. The game was tight, with scores back and forth. The crowd was massive, with more than 50,000 in attendance.

ASU was in their prime, ranked 8th, while Florida had started off hot, but it was just not their time. Finally, ASU came out in the 4th quarter and managed to win the game, 45 to 38. 50 years ago today, the first ever Fiesta Bowl was played, and an Arizona team was the winner.
