It was just 168 years ago today, December 30, 1853, when the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, James Gadsden, along with Mexican President Santa Ana, signed the first draft of what would be known as the Gadsden Purchase. In 1848 the United States had won an incredible victory over Mexico, and thus were able to purchase a large amount of territory. The Gadsden Purchase would solidify America’s grasp on the continent.

The reason for the purchase was that the ground was ideal for the Transcontinental Railroad. With a payment of $10 million U.S. dollars, a sum of more than $200 million today, America bought a total of 30,000 sq. miles. The cost almost bankrupt the United States, and we had offered to sell the territory back, but Mexico refused. Thanks to the purchase, the U.S. borders have been defined, and Southwest Arizona and New Mexico are in American hands.
