It was just 32 years ago today, December 8, 1990, when Galileo, no, not the astronomer, but the space probe, passed by Earth on its intergalactic mission of taking photos of alien planets.

galileo, earth, history, planet, space, this day in history

For more than 14 years, Galileo went around exploring, and twice it passed by Earth, both on December 8th. The first time Galileo passed was in 1990 and the second in 1992. On this date, the space probe passed Earth a mere 600 miles away, marking also the first time that a space probe managed to make it back to Earth, or at least near it.

Galileo had quite the illustrious career, however, after her service, Galileo was sent into Jupiter’s atmosphere, finally terminating her mission. 32 years ago today, it wasn’t a shooting star, nor a comet, nor a Texas-sized asteroid, but a man-made probe that passed by Earth.
