It was just 80 years ago today, January 1, 1942, when the representatives from 26 nations signed the Atlantic Charter in Washington. First drafted by Roosevelt and Churchill the previous August, this document will not only reaffirm the principles which these nations were defending but also require them to use all their resources to defeat the common enemy and not accept a separate peace.

Led by the United States, Great Britain and the Soviet Union, China, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Poland, Santo Domingo, South Africa and Yugoslavia all joined in signing.
