This Day In History, January 20th, 2020 – “In Old Arizona”

Article audio is made possible by CAST11 Prescott Podcast Network. A Talking Glass Media production.

It was just 91 years ago today, January 20, 1929, that Hollywood made history. For years, movies had amazed their audiences with “faces”, as the movies had been silent. The movie In Old Arizona, was the first Western talkie, and the first ever talkie filmed outdoors, which was no easy task for the budding technology. Though the title mentions the great state of Arizona, filming was mostly in Utah and California. The new technology of the talkies did not hurt the industry, or American fascination with Westerns. 91 years ago history was made, and the movies began to talk.
