It was just 244 years ago today, June 14, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress finally created legislation that tried to establish a formal American Flag. Before this date, various flags abounded for the different militias and Military units. In fact, I encourage you all to learn about the wide variety of flags, very fascinating. However, it is with this legislation that we get the idea of the Betsy Ross Flag. She was a real person, a seamstress from Philadelphia, and also an early abolitionist. However, in history, sometimes we go with the legend, for the actual facts can’t be proven. As of today, barring any new revelations, we have no proof that Washington asked Betsy to make a flag. In fact, Washington’s own flag used six-pointed stars, instead of our five-pointed stars.

Even after the legislation was passed, confusion still abounded, for the legislation was not specific.

“Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Being vague, there were many flags that started with the White strip first, instead of the traditional red stripe. Also, the common Betsy Ross flag with the thirteen White stars in a circle on the blue canton, was not always seen, for the legislation did not call for how the thirteen White stars should be placed. In the end, the Betsy Ross flag, if she was the first to actually make it, became the adopted flag of the United States, and should always be flown with pride, especially on this Flag Day, for it all started 244 years ago today.
