This Day In History, June 22nd, 2022 – “I Pledge Allegiance”

The CAST 11 Podcast Network is sponsored by the Prescott Valley Outdoor Summit. Where adventure comes together.

It was just 80 years ago today, June 22, 1942 when Congress officially adopted the Pledge of Allegiance. Now, it’s not quite what you think of today. In fact, in 1942, it read like this, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The version we our familiar with today, with the addition of God, would not take place until the 1950s.

Though Congress officially adopted the pledge on this date, schools, government organizations, and American social events were already saying the pledge before the turn of the century. Francis Bellamy, a Baptist Minister, is credited with writing the pledge, and this was way back in 1892. As the pledge has changed over history, so to is the way we present our hands while saying it. Now, it’s customary to remove any hats, and place your hand above your heart. Back then, and up until the start of WWII, Americans, especially children, would outstretch their right hand, with their palm of the hand facing the sky. This was stopped, for it looked very similar to the Fascist salute. So, if you’re ever looking at old images of Americans saying the pledge, and it looks like a bunch of NAZI’s saluting the American flag, don’t worry, it’s not some conspiracy. 80 years ago today, Congress officially recognized the Pledge of Allegiance.
