It was just 70 years ago today, June 26, 1952, when the static front line in Korea came alive as the UN battled the Communist for control of a strategic hill known as Old Baldy.
In the ultimate contest for King of the Hill the battle would last until August with heavy casualties for both sides. Right on the MLR Main Line of Resistance, Old Baldy was the epitome of the battles for the high ground in this stalemated war in Korea that was fading from the headlines. Since the peace talks began a year earlier the Communist Chinese Forces, CCF, had brought in enough artillery to compete with the UN in massive bombardments on any sector of the front.
In fact, Old Baldy got its name from such heavy shelling that all the trees had been blasted into splinters leaving the mountain top bare, bald. To sum up the battle there is a scene from the movie M*A*S*H when after a deluge of wounded almost overwhelming the 4077th General Hammond calls up Colonel Blake to tell him the battle for Old Baldy was over, Henry replies “Who Won ?”.
What was happening yesterday, on June 25th?
