This Day In History, May 3rd, 2022 – “Americans Land on the North Pole”

It was 70 years ago today, May 3, 1952, that the first Americans landed on the North Pole. U.S. Airforce Pilot Lieutenant Colonel Joseph O. Fletcher along with Lieutenant Colonel William P. Benedict, flew a C-47 with skies right to the accepted spot of the North Pole. Others had claimed to have done this beforehand, most notably American explorers Dr. Frederick Cook in 1908, and Robert Peary, 1909. Along for the historic flight was Dr. Albert P. Crary, who in 1961, reached the South Pole on a motorized vehicle, becoming the first person in history to have been “polarized.”

In an interesting note, the American crew did not find Santa’s Village, which is explainable, because they were not the first people there. On April 23, 1948, a Soviet team, led by Aleksandr Kuznetsov, were actually the first people acknowledged to reach the North Pole. So that’s why Santa is not at his work shop, the Commies got to him before us.
