It was just 42 years ago today, November 18, 1978, when the world was shocked when members of the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project participated in a mass suicide – murder pact in the jungles of Guyana, South America. Jim Jones, leader of the freaked – out Peoples Temple of socialist weirdoes had followed their leader, Jim Jones, to a fatal fanatical end. The mass slaughter began when Democrat Congressman Leo Ryan, representing concerned family members from California’s 11th District, had flown to see members of the cult. Upon Jones’s own orders, members of the Peoples Temple killed the Congressman and some members of his party at the airport in Port Kaituma,.

Once the Congressman was killed, Jones managed to either persuade, or force, the members of the Peoples Temple to kill themselves, many with grape Flavor Aid, similar to Kool Aid, and poisoned with Valium, chloral hydrate, cyanide, and Phenergan. In the end, a total of 918 people died, this includes the Congressman, and Jones himself, who was shot. 42 years ago today, tragedy struck our world.
