This Day In History, October 21st, 2019 – “Liberty And Union”

Article audio is made possible by CAST11 Prescott Podcast Network. A Talking Glass Media production.

It was just 245 years ago today, October 21, 1774, that the Taunton Flag, symbolizing Liberty and Independence from England was raised over the Taunton, Massachusetts Courthouse. This historic moment occurred when the Sons of Liberty kicked out all loyalists, people in the colonies still loyal to the crown, and needed something to celebrate. The great honorable Reverend Caleb Barnum suggested that they should raise a new flag. The Betsey Ross flag had not yet been made, so the Colonists erected a 112-foot pole, took a British flag, sewed the words “Liberty and Union” on her, and hoisted the flag high in defiance, just 245 years ago today.
