It was just 225 years ago today, October 21, 1797, when the U.S.S. Constitution, “Old Ironsides” was launched from the port of Boston. Today, The Constitution is the oldest ship afloat and is still registered in the U.S. Navy, serving the men and women of this nation. There are bigger ships afloat, with a lot of history as well, but this 44-gun frigate beats them all.
Old Ironsides has served her country well, fighting Muslim pirates in the Mediterranean, taking on the British during the War of 1812, and then serving as barracks, and a museum, and now still she is on active duty. 225 years ago today, one ship was launched into the water and history.
