It was just 49 years ago today, September 9, 1971, when prisoners at the Attica Correction Facility, in Attica, New York, rioted and took control of the prison, taking 42 hostages. Demanding better rights, 1,281 of the prisons 2,200 inmates stormed the prison, and grabbed the Nation’s attention for four days.

This Day in History, history, American History

Police Commissioner Russell Oswald led the negotiations, but with little results, as neither side was willing to give in, even Governor Nelson Rockefeller refused to visit the scene. Finally, Police and National Guard soldiers stormed the prison. In the end, 33 prisoners were killed, 8 by the prisoners themselves, while 10 correctional officers were killed, some by the prisoners, others during the heat of combat from the assaulting Police and Military forces. The violence continued after Attica, as Weathermen Terrorists attacked the New York Department of Corrections building a short time after. A riot led to a hostile takeover, that ended with bloodshed, 49 years ago, today.
