The Yavapai College volleyball team fought valiantly Friday night, forcing five sets in its match against the Matadors of Arizona Western. The Roughriders, however, lost the fifth set, moving their overall record to 6-9 and ACCAC record to 1-2.

Set one saw the Roughriders come out of the gates quickly with the Matadors having no answer for Yavapai’s blocking. After being up 19-12, Yavapai eventually won the set 25-19.

In set two, the Matadors flipped the script and started the set with a 4-0 lead. Down by as many as 16-8, Yavapai’s incredible blocking kept them in set two and saw them get as close as 18-15. Arizona Western, however, emerged victorious in the set 25-19.

Set three was the least competitive of the five sets as the Matadors took that one with a 25-16 score.

Trailing for the majority of set four, the Roughriders made play after play to keep themselves in the match. Sophomore right hitter Samantha Holman registered two of those plays (both kills) with the Riders down 10-5 and 11-8.

After trailing 19-15 late in set four, Yavapai scored six of the next eight points to tie the set at 21 all.

That’s when sophomore middle blocker Paiten Langston logged back-to-back aces to give Yavapai a 23-21 advantage and one they would not waste as it forced a winner-take-all fifth set with a 25-22 victory.

Set five was an intense back-and-forth rally for both squads. The Roughriders and Matadors were tied at seven, eight, nine, ten, and eleven until Arizona Western scored the final four points to win the set 15-11 and match 3-2.
