A two-hour weather delay in the valley might have dampened the playing surface but was unable to dampen the play of the Yavapai College women’s soccer team as it defeated the Gateway Geckos 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Roughriders sweep the season series with Gateway and move to 5-7 overall on the season and 2-2 in ACCAC contests.

It wouldn’t be a Yavapai game without a goal from freshman forward Emma Alvarez. The freshman had scored the previous five goals for the Roughriders, including a hat trick in their home game against Gateway earlier this season, coming into today.

Alvarez pushed the streak to six with an unassisted first-half strike for the Roughriders first score of the game. It was also Alvarez’s eighth goal of the season.

In the second half, freshman midfielder Isabella Merino scored her third goal of the season on a header off of a corner kick. Freshman forward Dani Mares took home the assist on the play, her third assist of the season.

Merino’s score proved to be the game-winner as the Roughriders took home the 2-1 victory.
