Join Liz Makings, collections manager of the Arizona State University Vascular Plant Herbarium, for a field workshop focused on the annual plants of the Sonoran Desert. Liz will explain the details of some important desert flowers with the help of a hand lens (strongly recommended) and guide participants in the basics of recognizable field characters and plant identification.

With a little luck and some precipitation, the group could be dazzled with a rare desert bloom. Even without the bloom, there are always natural wonders to explore.

This full-day exploration will cover easy to moderate terrain. We will depart NHI at 8:00 am and will be back by 6:00 pm.

    Registration: $75 per person
Transportation to and from the site is available for an additional $10.

Liz Makings is a botanist interested in plant biogeography, conservation, and taxonomy. Makings is the collections manager of the Arizona State University Vascular Plant Herbarium and an administrator for the Southwest Environmental Information Network. She is an active member of the ASU botanical community and teaches Arizona Flora, Grasses of Arizona, and Sonoran Desert Field Botany at ASU.
